In 1977 the Nationalist Socialist Party (Nazi) of America planned a march first in Chicago and then in the village of Skokie, IL. The Nazi party had long been known as a discriminatory group that advocated hateful messages towards Jews, minorities, immigrants, and other individuals and groups who did not share their vision of white supremacy. Nazi party members met wearing swastikas and Nazi military uniforms. The purpose of the march was to protest against the wealthy Jewish citizens of Skokie and to spread their message of white power. Drug makers had often felt that their first amendment rights were violated. The first amendment grants them the right to freedom of speech. For a long time, Drug makers argued that they should be able to talk to doctors about unapproved uses of their products as long as they don't lie about their products. When drug makers take the Food and Drug Administration to court, many courts sided with drug makers, but drug makers are still often fined for talking to doctors about unapproved uses of their products. Recently, Amarin Pharma sued the F.D.A for violating their first amendment rights by fining them for talking to doctors about off-label uses for their products. The company believed that they have the right to free speech as long as they remain truthful.

Phelps was an American Pastor who lead the Westboro Baptist Church. With his ignorant followers, Phelps often picketed at various events such as military funerals, gay pride gatherings, ceremonies, and more. At these events, him and his follower would say hateful things and warn people of God's wrath. Phelps's church is built around anti-homosexual ideologies, and their slogans consisted of degenerate words such as "God hates fags". In the political cartoon, the artist is criticizing Phelps for abusing the first amendment.
